Dr. Symeon Rodger on Tai Chi & Internal Power

In this Master of the Month Q&A, I interviewed Dr. Symeon Rodger on Tai Chi and developing personal power by going beyond superficial form practice into internal function. We explored posture and skeletal alignments (especially the alignments of the feet, legs, and pelvis) and replacing muscular force with whole-body power, gravity, and efficient biomechanics, which lead to relaxation throughout the body.

Using such methods as Tui Shou (Push Hands), Zhan Zhuang (Embracing the Tree), and simple pressure-testing drills, we examined how incoming force reveals misalignments, how tension compromises balance, and how rooting depends on weight distribution through the feet. This conversation connected these principles to everyday life via development of Harmonious Culture of Movement. We also discussed Wu Wei (Non-doing), mindfulness-based tension release, and why so many Tai Chi teachers tend to focus on forms without testing for function.
